Barbara,
I had the opportunity to view your performances. You have such warmth. It is like each word - phrase has a secondary meaning because of your intonations and non-verbal expressions.

Regards,

Ben

The Mystery of Singing
by: Barbara Lewis

Thank you, Ben for your very generous comments.

I started to sing when I was quite young. My first "performance" was in a talent contest. I was 7. I sang "Tammy." Lots of kids from the neighborhood entered the contest - singing, playing the piano, doing acting skits etc.

I remember that I found the whole thing very exciting. I didn't tell my parents that I had done this until I found out that I had won the contest. Then I invited them to the big "show" in the park. It was a great thrill for me to stand on stage and hear the people applaud and see my mother's surprised and pleased face.

I don't think there is anything that can compare to the feeling of singing and being heard. It has mysterious power. Very compelling.

There is the physical component - it feels wonderful to sing well. To create expressive sound with the fragile human body. And there is also the "I'm here!!!!" component. It's so fulfilling to be recognized.

A life-long journey, both inner and outer, as we are discovering.

My best,
Barbara
