Hitting The Bottom of the Well on the Wrong Note

by Robert Perry
(Pearl, Ms.)

I was in a production of Man of La Mancha playing Pedro the head mule herder. There was a fight scene where the leading lady was to hit me in the back of the head with a sword and knock me into a well made of plywood with a pillow at the bottom for my head to hit when I fell in. I missed the pillow and slammed into the plywood, busted my head open, was taken to the emergency room, stitched up and brought back to sing the Impossible Dream at the end of the play. My voice seemed a little higher, but the show must go on.
